How to wire Azatrax model train detectors as inputs to an NCE Mini-Panel® or NCE Switch-It® decoder.
|
Automating a turnout with an NCE Switch-It ®
Azatrax infrared train detectors can be used as inputs to an NCE Switch-It turnout decoder or NCE Mini-Panel.
This allows the NCE system to respond when a train arrives at a selected location on the layout.
By using infrared train detectors, no modifications to the track or rolling stock are necessary.
MRD1 and MRD8 train detectors are wired to the NCE decoders in the same way as push buttons or magnetic reed switches.
This diagram shows two Azatax MRD1-V single infrared train detectors connected to a Switch-It.
This adds automatic control for the turnout.
- Connect the Switch-It push button common to the QC terminal of each MRD1-V.
- Connect the Q1 terminals of the MRD1-V detectors to the push button inputs.
- Set each MRD1-V for 'one-shot' activation of one second or less.
Two more MRD1-V's can be connected to the SWB push button inputs to provide automatic control to a second turnout.
Connect sensor and power to each MRD1-V according to its instructions.

Use the momentary version of the MRD8.
- Connect the push button 'common' of one Switch-It to the C14 terminal of the MRD8.
- Connect the Q1-Q4 terminals of the MRD8 to the Switch-It push button inputs.
- Remove the JMP1 jumper from the MRD8.
NCE says the 'common' of one Switch-It should not be connected to the 'common' of another Switch-It.
Connect sensors and power to the MRD8 circuit according to its instructions.
A second Switch-It may be connected to the same MRD8 as shown.

Detectors as inputs to an NCE Mini Panel ®
Train detectors can connect to the inputs of an NCE Mini-Panel just like push buttons or toggle switches.
Momentary or standard (sustained) versions of the detectors may be used, depending on your intended use.
- Momentary detectors act like push buttons, they activate briefly when a train arrives.
- Standard detectors act like toggle switches, they stay 'on' as long as a train is on the sensor.
Connect sensors and power to the MRD1 and MRD8 detectors according to their instructions.
