AC or DC Latching Relay with DPDT contacts

A relay with a memory

  • Latching power relay with DPDT double-pole, double-throw contacts, plus
    • quick-connect or screw terminals
    • flyback voltage protection, and
    • printed circuit board for convenient mounting.
  • May be used with model railroad 'snap' switches for position feedback, signal lights or routing frog power.
  • Latching feature ensures that this relay will maintain its same position when system power is turned off.

• Coils may be actuated by 10 to 15 volts AC or DC.
• When actuated with DC voltage, the 'KC' (common) terminal must be connected to the positive (+) side of the power supply.
• Coil resistance: 240 ohms each.
• Best choice for use with low-side transistor switches, because the flyback voltage of the LARY-AC is clamped at a much lower level than the flyback voltage produced by the LARY-DC relay.

LARY-AC Example circuits
1. Add electrical contacts for signal switching to a twin-coil, 3-wire 'snap' switch machine:

turnout application

2. Using transistor switches to actuate the latching relay:

3. Use LARY-AC with Lionel Fastrack® switch [pdf].

About CDU's (Capacitor Discharge Units)
If your twin-coil switch machine is powered by a CDU, such as a Circuitron Snapper or an NCE Snap-It, use a LARY-DC latching relay with your turnout.
CDU's send a DC pulse to the switch machine, and if it happens to be positive with respect to 'common' then the LARY-AC latching relay will not work.

• Coils actuated by 10 to 15 volts DC.
• Common terminal ('KC') may connect to either the positive (+) or negative (-) side of the power supply.
• Coil resistance: 240 ohms each.
• On-board varistors snub the coil flyback voltage to protect the actuating switch contacts.

LARY-DC Example circuits
1. Add electrical switching to a single coil, 2-wire 'snap' switch machine, such as Kato, LGB or AristoCraft:

DC snap turnout application

2. Use push buttons to control the direction of a slow motion switch machine (Tortoise, SwitchMaster or Cobalt Classic) or other DC motor:

• Coil actuated by 10 to 16 volts DC.
• Reverse the coil voltage polarity to change the contact position.
• Coil resistance: 1400 ohms.
• On-board varistor to limit the coil flyback voltage.

• Also compatible with stall-motor switch machines. Add position feedback contacts to Switch Master, Switch Tender, Tortoise and Cobalt Classic.

LARY-DCS Example circuits
Electrical contacts for signal switching or position feedback for a Kato single coil, 2-wire 'snap' switch machine:
Note - for LGB and AristoCraft switch motors, use the LARY-DC relay above, not the LARY-DCS relay.

DC snap turnout application

Connecting LARY-DCS latching relay to a Kato track switch by modifying a Kato 24-841 turnout extension cord:
• Cut the 24-841 cable
• Strip all wire ends
• Twist the two red wire ends together
• Twist the two black wire ends together
• Insert the red wire ends into relay terminal KC
• Insert the black wire ends into relay terminal KB

SwitchMaster turnout contacts
LARY-DCS relay adds turnout contacts to a SwitchMaster or SwitchTender switch motor.
Tortoise additional turnout contacts
LARY-DCS relay adds more turnout contacts to a Tortoise switch motor.

For signals that have LEDs, always use a DC power source and current limiting resistors, as shown here:
LED turnout indication

Kato and Aristocraft / LGB switch machines are single coil, as shown here:

For signals that have LEDs, always use a DC power source and current limiting resistors, as shown above.
